Free fall

Beloveds,
The first thing someone in my generation usually thinks about when they hear the words free fall is the song by Tom Petty called “Freefalling”. The music is good but the lyrics don’t get at what I had in mind for today. I’m thinking about the kind of feeling that makes you feel out of control. Sometimes that is a good feeling. I myself have had this feeling during deep periods of mediation. Sometimes though, it can be a time when things are unpredictable and scary and not having control or answers can be debilitating. Have you ever been in a situation where you have had that overwhelming feeling that spins you into a free fall? Often an illness can send us into a free fall as we figure out how to cope.
I’ve come to discover that friends who have experienced this themselves can be the best guardrails, comforters, and their presence can hold you still while all your insides turn. It’s like they are sitting beside you in a seat on a roller coaster and they are just there to hold up their hands and scream with you. BLESS THOSE FRIENDS!!
So, for those friends that check in and care to be in the deep with us. Thank you. And for those of us who free fall, take some deep breaths, find your people, let them care for you with love you.

I'm still wavering
on the edge of the cliff
feeling the tight straps around my legs,
knowing I will be caught
when I fall
but still seeing the
thousand foot drop beneath me.
